A Change & A piece of Advice

Hi everyone-- Happy Horse Year!

My group consisted of me, Xueting, Yunhui and Tingting, we visited Madam T today. Before we went up, Kah Suah reminded us that Madam T seemed to be in a low spirit. Indeed, when we saw her we could sense that she wasn’t particularly happy. However, she played a good host; treating us new year goodies and giving us drinks. She also put on her smiles for us although we knew she’s bothered with family matters. It has been some time since my last visit to Madam T’s, and I felt that she has changed a little—for the good, that is.

When I first visited Madam T, she wasn’t as ‘chatty’ as today and usually we would run out of things to say. Today was different. She would take initiative to talk a bit more and even share stories about her family with us. I remembered family topics were always a sensitive issue hence we didn’t dare to probe too much. It was a pleasant surprise to me that she would now feel comfortable to share with us her troubles. Besides this, Madam T also took the initiative to know us, she would go one by one to ask about our backgrounds and so on. I remembered that she wasn’t as interactive before.

Perhaps it was because we have 2 fluent Hokkien speakers (Xueting and Yunhui) in our group to chat with her; perhaps it was because our frequent visits touched her, so she opened up to us; no matter what, this was really a good sign. It means that we (THES volunteers) have built a rapport with her.

On an ending note, in our conversation, the topic mainly revolved around health and family. As a person who had gone through so much, these are some words of wisdom from Madam T: Nothing is more important than health! Take good care of your body and never take good health for granted. I’m certain that many of us are well aware of this, but I think we tend to let the words pass through our ears, simply because we are young and in good shape. But if we do not cultivate good living habits (e.g. eat healthily, exercise regularly, have a good sleeping pattern etc.), reality will hit us—we will not be young forever— and we would bear the consequences in the future if not now.

Therefore, here’s wishing all a healthy lifestyle!
